Master of the Mountains....Nicholas Roerich 1874-1947
A video by Michael Breen.

Nicholas Roerich was what we would call a 20th century Renaissance man. An artist, set and costume designer ( including for the Diaghilec Ballet ), author, lawyer, scientist, educator, spiritual philosopher, archaeoligist and explorer, as well as friend and advisor to numerous heads of state, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1929. one of the greatest legacies was the body of 6000 paintings that portray the spiritual connection between humanity and nature. the awesome majesty of the Russian steppes and the Himalayas are no mere backdrop to the prehistoric herb-gathers and shamans, Tibetan nomads, meditating Avatars and sword-brandishing Archangels of Roerich’s world. Landscape is a life -giving participant, breathing its soul through these figures who thereby lose their sense of isolation. Michael breen has spent years travelling to museums in the U.S, Russia and elsewhere, filming Roerich’s fearlessly colourful, almost Fauvist, paintings. His video contains a 10 minute historical introduction, followed by around 50 minutes of mountain paintings - many not available in any of the books currently available - accompanied by glorious music. Together they create a meditative space where we too are “breathed through” by the magnificence of Roerich’s mountains in one of the most ravishing videos to have come Adyar’s way.
